Beyond Reality
What happens when I let go of all the details of trying to be realistic and simplify to just shapes and lines?
di·lation of imagination
Darkness is the absence of light. In low light, your pupils open up, or dilate, to let in more light. My series "di·lation of imagination" explores the relationship between darkness and light, and how the mind expands to let light in. In a shadowed space, the less light you have the more it stands out. Light is intensified by darkness.

less is more
I have been experimenting with the minimal amount of dots and lines needed to create an eye in the shadows.

chiaroscuro
Using stark contrasts of lights and darks, my intention is to convey a mysterious, deep emotion in each of my portraits.

my discovery
The darkness that I thought would be the dominant feature became secondary, while the light became the interest.
You know when you have found that perfect painting, like it was made just for you. Somehow a connection or familiarity draws you to it and stirs an energy inside when you see it.

FAMOUS FACES

Layers, layers, layers
I love contrast - bright whites against a dark background, or using vibrant colors that pop. I also love lines - hard lines with crisp edges that blur into soft shading to show round forms. Through a series of layering, I work to develop a richness in my paintings that create depth and dimension.
